JAKARTA, INDONESIA — Following Indonesian President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s announcement that beloved Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has given the green light for the execution of Mary Jane Veloso, Foreign Affairs Secretary Perfecto Yasay hurriedly “announced” that he was “joking.”
“Joke lang po yung reprieve [ni Veloso]. I was only tired and hungry when I made that announcement. Siyempre, mga tao lang naman po tayo. Kahit naman si Pangulo[ng Duterte], nagugutom at napapagod din,” said Yasay in an “”ambush interview”” when reporters mobbed his hotel room in Jakarta following Widodo’s announcement.
“You have to understand what we are saying, para hindi niyo po kami ma [take] out of context,” Yasay “added,” before slamming the door shut on the reporters.
Mary Jane Veloso, an Overseas Filipina Worker, was arrested in 2010 after being caught at the Indonesian airport with 2.5 kilograms of cocaine inside the lining of her bag. Last September 9, Yasay announced that Indonesia had agreed to extend the reprieve on her execution, which was suspended following an appeal by then-President Aquino in May 2015, indefinitely.
However, as of writing, Veloso is set to be executed on an unspecified date in the near future after President Duterte told Widodo to “go ahead.”
President Duterte could not be reached for comment on the matter. Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella “”clarified”” that the President is currently “”busy”” buying polo shirts with Widodo, and should not be bothered unless he ordered otherwise.
